How to use this calculator
Enter the percentage in the first field and the number it applies to in the second. The calculator divides the rate by 100, then multiplies by the number. Use it for a share of a budget, a score, a quantity or a percentage-based adjustment. To add the percentage amount, add the main result to your starting number.
Formula
Percentage ÷ 100 × Number
Worked example
15% of 200 = 15 ÷ 100 × 200 = 30. The decimal factor is 0.15, and 200 minus 30 is 170. At 150%, the amount is 300: percentages can exceed a whole.
Assumptions and limitations
This tool finds a percentage amount, not the percentage relationship between two values. A negative percentage produces a signed amount. The subtraction statistic is a mathematical remainder; it is not automatically a discount or a balance owed.
Frequently asked questions
Can a percentage exceed 100%?
Yes. A rate of 125% means 1.25 times the number. For example, 125% of 80 is 100. A 100% share is exactly the whole.
How precise are these results?
Calculations use ordinary floating-point arithmetic. Results show up to six decimal places; very small nonzero values use scientific notation. They are estimates for everyday arithmetic, not arbitrary-precision accounting.
Can I use decimals and negative numbers?
Yes where the input allows them. Percentage change requires a nonnegative starting value; difference uses nonnegative values; discount requires a nonnegative price and a rate between 0% and 100%.
Keep the same units for both values. Amounts have no assumed currency.
